Service

Q: What is StratosNet

A: StratosNet is quite simply an Internet Service provided directly through Stratos for the convenience and benefit of Stratos mobile satellite users. It operates exactly like a regular Internet service, but has many more added benefits that were implemented specifically to optimize the satellite link to the Internet, such as on-the-fly compression. In conjunction with the robust Stratos mobile satellite network, StratosNet offers enhanced Internet functionality with the convenience of online registration, integrated billing and Stratos' 24 x 7 customer care. Each subscriber receives their own StratosNet email address, as well as an FTP account for file transfer and optional web browsing, as some satellite phone owners may not want this capability to be enabled.

Q: Why should I use StratosNet?

A: StratosNet has been designed from the ground up for mobile satellite use. Specifically StratosNet offers these advantages.

Q: How do I get started?

  1. Register for a StratosNet account.
  2. You will receive a welcome letter containing your StratosNet username & passwords
  3. You will also receive a StratosNet CD. Follow the instructions with the CD to setup your computer with StratosNet.

Q: Who can use StratosNet?

  • StratosNet is available to all Stratos customers.
  • StratosNet works with all Inmarsat circuit-switched data-capable satellite terminals (Inmarsat-A,B,M,mini-M, M4)
  • StratosNet works in all four ocean regions (AOR/W, AOR/E, POR, IOR)
  • StratosNet works with all LandSat/MarineSat & Oceancell (AMSC) data terminals

Q: What does StratosNet cost?

A: There are no registration or monthly fees associated with use of the StratosNet service, and the CD is free as well. You pay only the satellite airtime charges incurred to connect to StratosNet, as itemized on your monthly bill.

Q: What Operating Systems does StratosNet work with?

A: The StratosNet service itself will work with any Operating System that supports TCP/IP and PPP. However, the StratosNet installation CD only works with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows NT 4. If you are using an alternate OS, you can manually configure your computer to access StratosNet. The following resources are available:

  • The StratosNet User Guide (available on the StratosNet CD)
  • StratosNet Application Notes
  • StratosNet Customer Care

Q: Can I limit who I receive e-mail from?

A: Your StratosNet user profile can be tailored to determine who can and CANNOT send messages to your mailbox. The StratosNet service can be configured to include or exclude all e-mail addresses or accept/reject all messages from a single domain name or specific e-mail address.

Q: Can I limit my StratosNet account to e-mail only?

A: Some customers, for various reasons, prefer to not be able to browse the web via their StratosNet account. Stratos can limit your StratosNet account to e-mail only. You can choose this when you sign-up (on the registration form) or later (by contacting Stratos Customer Care).

Q: What do I do if I have problems?

A: Contact Stratos Customer Care

Technical

Q: What does, "Error 630, you have been disconnected from the server you are dialing" mean?

A: Error 630 usually indicates that Dial-up Networking (DUN) isn't receiving a response from the communications device. This may be caused by:

  • Incorrect Comm settings (Com port, DTE rate, etc)
  • Incorrectly configured satellite terminal
  • Faulty communications cable
  • Satellite terminal not commissioned for data
Steps to take:
  • Ensure you are using the correct modem driver and the settings are correct.
  • Ensure your satellite terminal is correctly configured for data communications.
  • Ensure the communications cable is in working order.
  • Ensure the satellite terminal is commissioned for data.

Q: Can I look at the headers of my e-mail so I can decide if I want to download a message or delete it?

A: Yes. IMAP allows you to do this. Please refer to the Application Note "Selectively Downloading StratosNet E-mail Using IMAP".

Q: Can I restrict e-mail from certain people?

A: Yes, you can opt to only allow e-mail from certain addresses, to allow all e-mail except from certain addresses, or a combination of both.

Please contact Customer Care for assistance

Q: Can I restrict people from sending me large emails?

A: Currently, StratosNet cannot limit individual e-mails by size. You can, however, limit the total size of your StratosNet mailbox.

Please contact Customer Care for assistance

Q: When I check my mail, I get a message saying, "status: connect: contacting host: 127.0.0.1" followed by "There was no response. The server could be down or not responding. If you are unable to connect later, contact the server's administrator". What does this mean?

A: This usually indicates that StratosNet Enhanced Compression is not running.

Check for a purple 'V' in the system tray. If it is not present, select Start -> Programs -> Startup -> Venturi.

If this link does not exist, please refer to the Getting Started Guide or User Guide for assistance with installing StratosNet Enhanced Compression.

Q: I am more comfortable with Outlook Express than Netscape Messenger. Can I use Outlook Express instead?

A: Yes. Any Internet E-mail client (that supports POP3, IMAP4 & SMTP) will work with StratosNet. To configure Outlook Express 5 to work with StratosNet see the Application Note "Using Outlook Express 5 with StratosNet"
HTML PDF

Q: Can I access StratosNet from a landline phone?

A: StratosNet is designed to provide the best experience for mobile satellite users. It is not intended for use over the PSTN. You can, however, access your StratosNet e-mail from any Internet connection. Please see here for further details

Q: What is the FTP password used for?

A: Your StratosNet account has a username, an e-mail password and an FTP password. Your username and e-mail password is used for dialing up to StratosNet and accessing your StratosNet e-mail. Your StratosNet account also gives you an FTP "mailbox" where you can share files with others. To access your FTP "mailbox" you use your username and FTP password. You can distribute this FTP password to anyone you wish to share files (via FTP) with. Using this separate password prevents others from being able to access your StratosNet e-mail.

Q: When I start Netscape Messenger, it downloads the news in the preview pane. How can I stop this?

A: To disable automatic downloading and display of daily news, you need to disable the preview pane. This is accomplished by clicking the "minimize bar" in the middle of the bar. It looks like this:

Q: Can I use StratosNet on my Macintosh?

A: StratosNet will work on any platform that supports PPP, TCP/IP & CHAP. The StratosNet CD (and StratosNet Enhanced Compression) currently only supports Windows 95/98/NT/Me. Using StratosNet with a Macintosh (or other non-Windows platform) is a manual process. The StratosNet User Guide (contained on the CD) has further information. At this time, Technical Support is only available for Windows 95/98/NT/Me.

Please contact Stratos Customer Care for further assistance.

Q: When I try to connect, I get a message stating, "The computer cannot establish a dial up networking connection". What does this mean?

A: This error usually indicates that you are not using a Stratos LES. StratosNet only works through Stratos' LESs. Please use the appropriate Stratos LES for your region.

Please contact Customer Care for assistance

Q: Can I access my StratosNet E-mail over the Internet (while not connected to StratosNet)? Are there any limitations?

A: Yes. If you are using a computer with StratosNet installed, no changes are necessary. If you are using a computer without StratosNet installed, you must set your Incoming Mail Server to pop.stratosnet.com and your Outgoing Mail Server to smtp.stratosnet.com.

Limitations:

  • You cannot send e-mail from your StratosNet account unless you are dialed up to StratosNet.
  • Enhanced Compression only works when dialed-up to StratosNet
